RESUMO

Poorly differentiated adenosquamous carcinoma (glassy cell carcinoma) of the cervix is extremely rare, accounting for 1-2% of all cervical cancers. Herein, we report a case with coexistent poorly differentiated adenosquamous carcinoma (glassy cell carcinoma), "usual-type" adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma in situ of the cervix. A female patient in her 60 s was referred to our hospital and diagnosed with poorly differentiated adenosquamous carcinoma based on cervical cytology and biopsy. The tumor was classified as clinical stage IB1 cervical cancer following magnetic resonance imaging; radical hysterectomy was performed. Histopathological examination revealed poorly differentiated adenosquamous carcinoma (glassy cell carcinoma), usual-type adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma in situ, all coexisting. All carcinoma regions showed identical sizes to high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) in fragment analysis. The patient is currently alive, without evidence of recurrence, 31 months post surgery. In this case, three different carcinomas coexisted. Fragment analysis of the patient's HPV status suggested that all carcinomas were related to an infection with the same high-risk HPV type. To determine the precise mechanism of tumor development, i.e., whether the tumors were of the mixed or collision type, further studies are needed, including clonal analysis for the loss of heterozygosity pattern.

Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare benign neoplasm. Herein, we describe two cases of IVL at different levels of progression. The tumor in Case 1 was extensive, invading the right atrium after a hysterectomy for a uterine myoma. The tumor temporarily responded to hormonal treatment; however, tumor regrowth occurred. In contrast, the tumor in Case 2 extended only to the pelvic veins and was revealed preoperatively. Hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were performed, resulting in the complete surgical resection of the tumor. In Case 2, no recurrence has been observed. Tumor samples were evaluated for hyaluronan expression using Alcian blue staining (with and without hyaluronidase digestion). The tumor in Case 1 stained strongly positive for hyaluronan while the tumor in Case 2 stained weakly positive for hyaluronan. In contrast, a large non-IVL uterine leiomyoma (control) stained negative for hyaluronan. These results suggest a relationship between tumor hyaluronan expression and IVL progression, similar to that in other cancers.

To evaluate the effect of CD133(+) cells (endothelial progenitor cells) on the hypoxia-induced suppression of axonal growth of cortical neurons and the destruction of blood vessels (endothelial cells), we used anterograde axonal tracing and immunofluorescence in organ co-cultures of the cortex and the spinal cord from 3-day-old neonatal rats. CD133(+) cells prepared from human umbilical cord blood were added to the organ co-cultures after hypoxic insult, and axonal growth, vascular damage and apoptosis were evaluated. Anterograde axonal tracing with 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate was used to analyze axonal projections from the cortex to the spinal cord. Immunolabeling co-cultured tissues of the cortex and the spinal cord were used to investigate the effect of CD133(+) cells on the survival of blood vessels and apoptosis in the brain cortex. Hypoxia remarkably suppressed axonal growth in organ co-cultures of the cortex and the spinal cord, and this suppression was significantly restored by the addition of CD133(+) cells. CD133(+) cells also reduced the hypoxia-induced destruction of the cortical blood vessels and apoptosis. CD133(+) cells had protective effects on hypoxia-induced injury of neurons and blood vessels of the brain cortex in vitro. These results suggest that CD133(+) cell transplantation may be a possible therapeutic intervention for perinatal hypoxia-induced brain injury.

RESUMO

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare disorder showing venous malformations in the skin and gastrointestinal tract, and other internal organs. We encountered a patient with BRBNS in whom hemangiomas of the uterine cervix appeared during pregnancy. This was apparently the first reported occurrence. To avoid unexpected bleeding from hemangiomas, patients with BRBNS should be examined repeatedly for hemangiomas of the birth canal, and special care should be taken in deciding the mode of delivery.
